Nick Wooster: "I think a wardrobe is much like a garden"

"Wooster: I’ve owned certain pieces of clothing for 25 or 30 years and I’ve also gotten rid of things after a week. I think a wardrobe is much like a garden. It needs constant tending. I think from a personal hygiene sort of thing, I think underwear needs to be rotated frequently and I think that socks and those foundation garments are that sort of thing. There’s nothing more depressing that opening a drawer and seeing a yellowed t-shirt, so I think that you need to keep on top of your personal effects. But I think that there are shoes and jackets, leather pieces that are heirlooms, that you should hold onto forever."

Michael Bastian design ethos

"accessories in colors like canary yellow, bright teal, or neon orange are really at the heart of Bastian’s ethos — something familiar yet whimsically tweaked."

How to Make Your Own Shorts

http://www.valetmag.com/style/how-tos/2011/summer-survival-skills-how-to-cut-off-shorts-071511.php?style_top_lead
"Fold the pants together and cut both legs off just under the knee. This isn't the final cut, so don't worry about uneven hems or imperfect cuts.
Try them on and cuff each leg to the desired length. Take them off, smooth onto a flat surface, aligning all the seams and hems, then snip across in even cuts.
Gather the new hem and rub to loosen threads. Pull out or snip any long strands. Toss them in the washer for a soft, frayed edge."

Michael Bastian SS11

Last fall when I first saw Michael Bastian SS'11 I thought it seemed so far out there, and now it looks spot on.  Note: rolled up shorts.

Roy's Jeans - Video by Self Edge

http://vimeo.com/16075230
http://www.roydenim.com/buy-jeans
http://www.selfedge.com/

These jeans cost $275 - $335.

Features:
  • 100% Cotton 15oz Unsanforized Nihon Menpu Denim

  • 10oz Unsanforized Natural (unbleached) Cotton Pocket-Bags

  • A&E Cotton w/poly core threads: size 105, 80 & 60 in 7 different colors throughout the jean

  • YKK Solid Copper washer-burr rivets (hidden rivets)

  • YKK Gov't Black Brass donut buttons

  • Vintage Style Waist-Band Stitch (Chainstitched on lower / Single-Needle stitched on upper)

  • Single Layer Super Thick Leather Tag, Dyed/Stamped/Burnished by Hand

  • Sewn on vintage Union Special, Singer, Reece, and Merrow machines

  • Straight Leg Fit

  • The second version of Roy's straight leg jean, this time in a denim which is slightly heavier in weight and feel.

A jean made by hand, literally by one person. Everything from the patterns being cut to the leather tag starting out as a large sheet of cowhide these jeans are truly made one at a time by a single person. The denim is a beautiful 15oz unsanforized fabric woven by Japan's Nihon Menpu mill and the fit is a straight leg fit with a medium rise.

Words don't do these justice, never have a pair of jeans had so much life contained within them.

    Filson pocket square idea #3

I would like to see Filson produce a series of "rugged" pocket squares built around a selvedge theme.

    See for some ideas.

High margin product.  Just cut up some cloth, attach the filson logo and mark it up 500%.

    Filson pocket square idea #2

Here's my second idea for a Filson pocket square: raw denim.

Black shirts out, gray shirts in

    http://totakethetrain.wordpress.com/2011/05/09/esquire-style-advice-avoid-the-black-shirt/

    Good to know.

    Sid Mashburn belt buckle

I purchased this belt and buckle from Sid Mashburn.  Sid offers this belt in a couple shades of brown and black   Matt and Ian were super nice and sent me pictures of the various belts so I could choose which one I wanted.

Love this belt, but annoyingly it does not match up perfectly with my Allen Edmonds shoes.  I'm sure it matches with Sid's shoes.  It makes me wonder if Sid has a unique shade of light brown.  Maybe I'm being too picky anto matchy matchy.

Update: I'm planning on purchasing Sid Mashburn's silver belt buckle plus a dark brown leather belt.  With 20/20 hindsight, I should have chosen the dark brown belt.

    Rugby fit

    Fron modern dignified.

"With the huge success of J Crew, there have been a lot of classic American brands trying to rethink and redefine their look. While the brand's style is not as original as J Crew, they certainly are less expensive and provides an additional location to buy some of the classic American Prep pieces.  A perfect example of this is: Land's End Canvas, good clothes, great prices with a few pieces unique to the designer. "

"Rugby Shirt - this classic preppy item comes in either navy or light blue and is sold for only $45. I can be worn with jeans or khakis by itself or it can be thrown on over a button down shirt, as featured here. Thrown over a button down shirt, is my favorite look for a Rugby Shirt. It adds a little more style and character to the classic piece."
